King Broadcasting Company is one of only 11 commercial classical radio stations in the United States (out of 11,000) that are supported through advertising rather than listener donations. KING FM/king.org plays music from CD ranging from symphonies and concertos to chamber music, solo work to choral music. In addition, KING FM showcases performances recorded in concert in the American Pacific Northwest and around the world. In addition to playing classical music KING FM provides news updates from the BBC World Service and commentary on local arts and culture from writers at the Seattle Weekly newspaper. Legendary broadcaster Dorothy Bullitt created 98.1 KING FM in 1947 specifically to bring classical music to the Northwest. That visionary act was just one of many achievements that marked her leadership of King Broadcasting Company, where she served the public through excellence in radio and television until she died in 1989.
