Boat People SOS, founded in 1980, conducts joint rescue-at-sea missions with international organizations. It has rescued more than 3,000 Vietnamese boat people in the South China Sea. The organization s programs, serving more than 10,000 individuals a year, include direct services, capacity building and advocacy. Its programs include community organizing, community against domestic violence, disaster relief and recovery, health awareness programs for immigrants, HIV and AIDS prevention, and home ownership program. The organization also provides other programs, such as individual development accounts, marriage and family wellness, mental health prescreening, tax services, victims of exploitation and trafficking assistance, workplace safety education, and youth program. It has established collaboration with local and national service providers and various grassroots organizations. Boat People SOS is headquartered in Falls Church, Va., and has locations in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri and California.
