Dr. Van Blarcom earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1992 and his M.D. from the University of Kansas in 1996. He completed his pediatric residency at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1999.He started his professional career in 1999 as a general pediatrician in Elko, Nevada, where he worked for five years in a solo practice. He served as a pediatric preceptor for medical students from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine during his time in Elko. He served as the Chief of Pediatrics for Northeast Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko for several years, as well as serving the community of other capacities. He moved to Ogden, Utah in 2004, where he continued as a general pediatrician with Intermountain Healthcare at McKay-Dee Hospital and the Intermountain Layton clinic, also working in pediatric urgent care and pediatric sedation.His time at the University of Utah began in 2006 when he was hired as a clinician in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2008. He has clinical duties at Primary Children's Hospital, Primary Children's Hospital Lehi, and formerly at Intermountain Riverton Hospital. His primary focuses are patient care and education of medical students and residents.

She received the American Academy of Pediatrics Utah Chapter Service to Children Award and the American Academy of Pediatrics Murray Davidson Award, which recognizes clinical, teaching and research excellence in pediatric gastroenterology. She is recognized in the Hall of Honor of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Book has held numerous national leadership positions in the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation and North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition.
