Established in 19178, the Texas Department of Transportation works in collaboration c with local and regional officials and is responsible for planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining the state's transportation system. The department works to reduce congestion, enhance safety, expand economic opportunity and improve air quality. It also registers motor vehicles, provides travel information, licenses automobile dealers and oversees various transportation programs and services. The Texas Department of Transportation s bridge division provides assistance at the local and regional levels with in-house expertise in all aspects of structural planning, design, review, construction and inspection of bridges. Its Public Transportation Division provides financial, technical and coordination assistance to the state's public transit providers. The department also operates General Services Division, which handles procurement, as well as property, equipment fleet and records management issues.
