History
Sammy's House was established in 1999 as a home-based child care center in Austin, Texas serving four infants and toddlers who were medically fragile. The overwhelming response from parents and therapeutic professionals made it apparent there was a pressing need for this type of care in central Texas. To help meet this need, a group of families and concerned professionals came together to form a nonprofit organization and develop a service model, making plans to establish a larger, centrally located center that could serve more families. This new nonprofit - what became Sammy's House - opened a child development center in March of 2002. Our respite care program began in 2003. In the time since our inception, Sammy's House has served 4,300 children. We reach about 300 children every year in our programs. Our parents are welcomed and become part of a care-giving family, thus reducing feelings of isolation. If it takes a village to raise a child, a special child would require much more.
