Athens Utilities Board is a nonprofit organization owned by the city of Athens, Tenn. Athens Utilities Board is a full-service utilities organization for 13,000 customers in the city of Athens, Tenn. and surrounding McMinn County. For residential and commercial/industrial customers, it provides not only electric power, but also natural gas, water and wastewater services. AUB s four field divisions include power, natural gas, water and wastewater. Originally the Athens Electric System, a locally- owned private company, it was bought out by the Tennessee Electric Power Company. In 1939, the city of Athens purchased the power company and formed the board of public utilities, which included the water works that the city had purchased from the Ingleside Water Company in 1934.
