Sarah Helmick State Recreation Site, located 6 miles south of Monmouth off Highway 99W in Oregon, is a small and shady park along the Luckiamute River. It is the first state park established in Oregon and holds historical significance as the first land given to the Oregon State Highway Commission for park purposes. With picnic areas for groups, electricity, water, and picnic tables provided, visitors can enjoy a peaceful and scenic experience surrounded by big leaf maples.
Acquired between 1922 and 1985, the park's land includes donations from Sarah Helmick and her son, James, as well as contributions from William and Mary Weist and Peter and Maryle Larson. Additionally, land purchases were made, including a portion formerly used as an artillery range during World War II. Named after the generous donor, Sarah Helmick, who settled a 640-acre Donation Land Claim on the Luckiamute River in 1846, this park offers a meaningful and enjoyable outdoor retreat for all.
