Established in 1821, the Florida Department of Corrections is one of the largest state prison systems in the United States. It provides services to more than 94,000 inmates and over 150,000 offenders throughout Florida. The department operates nearly 135 prisons, jails, forestry camps, treatment centers and work release facilities. It is responsible for the protection and safety of the general public. The department offers basic education and literacy programs in the areas of digital design, printing, graphics and carpentry. It additionally coordinates a variety of vocational training and substance abuse programs for inmates and offenders. The department provides inmate supervision, investigation, violation reporting and offender referral services. The Florida Department of Corrections also offers transportation, health care and counseling services.
