The Hartz Group is a privately held real estate owner and developer with more than 35 million square feet of holdings in northern New Jersey and New York. Its more than 200 developments include major projects such as Harmon Cove in Secaucus, N.J.; Colgate Center in Jersey City, N.J.; 667 Madison Avenue in Manhattan; and Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken, N.J. The Hartz Group was founded in 1932 by Max Stern, a German immigrant who manufactured bird food under the Hartz Mountain brand, which was sold in 2000. The company s past business ventures have included local advertising magazines, alternative newspapers and carpet-cleaning machine rental departments. The Hartz Group has headquarters in New York and additional offices in Secaucus.
