History
Callen-Lorde's grassroots heritage dates back nearly 50 years to the St. Mark's Community Clinic, founded in 1969 to provide screening and treatment for sexually-transmitted infections. In 1983, St. Mark's merged with the Gay Men's Health Project to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed episodic care program housing the nation's first community-based HIV clinic. In 1998, Community Health Project changed its name to Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and moved into a modern, state-of-the-art facility in Manhattan's Chelsea district. Over the last two decades Callen-Lorde has continued to add new programs, including a dental clinic, mental health services, and an on-site pharmacy--and remains the New York metropolitan area's only facility targeting the healthcare needs of the LGBTQ communities and people living with HIV/AIDS.
