Monarch Casino & Resort was established in 1972 as a partnership between David Farahi and his brother-in-law Isaac Poura, when the two purchased the Golden Door Motel in Reno, Nev. In 1983, the motel began operating as a Travelodge franchise. In 1987, the company secured the rights from the City of Reno to place up to 50 slot machines on the property. In 1988, the company renovated and remodeled the property. In 1990, the company moved the motel units and began construction of a 160-room high-rise hotel tower and a low-rise structure containing gaming space with approximately 500 slot machines and 21 table games, an additional restaurant, several bars, a health club and an outdoor pool. Completed in eight months, the hotel casino opened in 1991 as the Clarion Hotel Casino. In 1993, the company was renamed the Monarch Casino & Resort. Monarch Casino & Resort is headquartered in Reno.
