The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is a century-old institution with an extensive selection of 40,000-plus works of art, photography, glasswork and more, in its permanent collection. NOMA is consistently ranked as one of the top museums in the South, hosting world-class exhibition in addition to its vast permanent collection. Not only is the museum kid-friendly, it is architecturally stunning and a great place to pass a few hours for serious aficionados and every day art patrons.
Best and worst times to go to NOMA
One of the best times to visit NOMA is wekly during Friday Nights @ NOMA, 5 - 9 p.m. Events change weekly and include art activities, live music, movie screenings, lectures and much more. Avoid weekday mornings during the school year when field trips are frequent. Instead, plan to visit after 12 noon.
Must see/do at NOMA
The museum has an impressive permanent collection, including Pablo Picasso's Woman in an Armchair, a must see. Ride the elevator (or brave the stairs) to the third floor and browse the extensive African Art collection of ceremonial masks, figures and clothing and other items. You will definitely want to take a few minutes and admire the breath-taking , unobstructed view of City Park's Big Lake from the second floor of the museum.
Admission to NOMA
Admission to the museum is in the $10 range with discounts for seniors, children and university students. Louisiana residents are admitted free on Wednesdays. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Parking and public transportation to NOMA
Because the museum is located in City Park, there's no shortage of parking. Visitors can park along the street leading to the museum or in one of the nearby parking lots. You can ride the red Canal Streetcar to the end of the line and walk across the street to the museum's entrance. Public bus service is also available.
Food at NOMA
The sleek and stylish Cafe NOMA serves up a healthy offering of hot and cold fare. Whether you choose to eat inside or outside on the patio, the view is wonderful. Try the Bacon Turkey Panini and if they have turtle soup during your visit, you'd be wise to get a bowl. A kids menu is available featuring a yummy flatbread pizza. Expect to pay around $10 for a kids meal and $18 for an adult meal (with a drink). Wine and beer by the glass, is also available.
Insider's tip for visitors to NOMA
Leave your large bags and backpacks in the car or at the hotel. If not, plan to check them in the coatroom as they are not allowed inside the museum area.
