Founded in 1968, Special Olympics Illinois is a nonprofit organization that raises funds through donations and grants and provides support services to sportspersons. The organization is accredited by Special Olympics, which operates in more than 175 countries. It offers support to over 21,000 athletes and provides recruitment and training programs. Special Olympics Illinois provides opportunities to participate in basketball, volleyball, skating, hockey, softball and aquatics. It organizes fundraising programs and tournaments. The organization also conducts Law Enforcement Torch Run, which offers participation to nearly 3,000 officers from law enforcement branch. Special Olympics Illinois maintains an Olympic Society that offers information on winter and summer games and provides gifts. It is headquartered in Normal, Ill.
