The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for carrying out a variety of programs for the management and conservation of resources on more than 250 million surface acres and over 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate. It manages rangelands and facilities for nearly 57,000 wild horses and burros. The department administers a soil and watershed management program that includes revegetation, protective fencing, and water development to conserve and enhance public land. The Bureau of Land Management administers more than 55 million acres of commercial forests and woodlands. It offers services for more than 15 western U.S. states. The Bureau of Land Management is a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
