Hippodrome State Theatre is 260-plus-seat facility that includes a rehearsal space, scene shop and art gallery. The theater includes an 80-seat cinema and has produced more than 100 world, American and Southeastern premieres. It stages productions for over 60,000 people annually. Hippodrome State Theatre s Hippodrome Improvisational Teen Theatre program was created in 1984 to address critical issues that affect teens and their families in Gainesville and surrounding areas in Florida. The theater has staged productions of playwrights, such as Tennessee Williams, Eric Bentley, Paula Vogel, Lee Breuer, Adrian Mitchell and Mario Vargas Llosa. It has also hosted nearly 200 visual arts exhibits, artistic residencies, master classes, festivals and guest artist presentations. Hippodrome State Theatre has staged plays, including The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild, The Land of Point and Hope for the Flowers. The theater additionally offers facilities on a rental basis for receptions, private parties, small lectures and meetings.
