Independence Unlimited is a non-residential, non-profit center for independent living that has been serving diverse populations in 38 cities and towns in mainly Hartford County since 1982. Governed and managed by people with disabilities, they provide a range of services including aging in place assessments, peer counseling, independent living skills training, and advocacy services to support individuals with disabilities to live in the community as an alternative to institutionalization.
With a commitment to being open and affirming, Independence Unlimited welcomes all individuals regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, or physical or mental disability. They strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals, both with and without disabilities, offering confidentiality, understanding, support, and empathy. Major funding for Independence Unlimited is provided by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Community Living, CT Department of Rehabilitation Services, private grants, fee for service, and individual donations.
