The First Congregational Church of San Rafael has its origins in the temperance movement of the 1890s. The original congregation formed following a desire to take communion with unfermented wine. Over the years, the church has grown and renovated. Pilgrim Park, 61 units of low-income housing, sits on the church land, as well, as part of a church effort to reach out to HUD. The congregation is heavily family-focused with Sunday School and a charitable effort called "Every Dollar Feeds Kids," which provides meals to impoverished kids in Mexico.
