The City of Berkeley's Public Health Division is dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of its community. Through the Healthy Berkeley Program, formerly known as the Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Program, the city provides funding and support for community- and school-based initiatives aimed at reducing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and raising awareness about their harmful health effects. Since 2015, the Berkeley City Council has allocated $5 million from its General Fund to fund programs that address the impact of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, evaluate program implementation, and support staffing and operating costs at the Public Health Division. The city also established the Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Product Panel of Experts to provide recommendations on reducing consumption and addressing the effects of sugar-sweetened beverages. The City of Berkeley encourages local businesses, restaurants, non-profits, medical professionals, and others to join their efforts in creating a healthier Berkeley by sharing knowledge and offering support.
